WEANER steers sold to a top of $1140 at the 22nd Annual Central Tablelands Cold Country Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale at the Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange, Carcoar, on Friday.
All up there were 8600 head offered and vendors were pleased with the solid prices right across the yarding.
The sniff of potential rain this weekend and showers in the past fortnight across patches of NSW certainly helped boost prices when compared to markets a fortnight ago.
The bulk of the yarding were top quality Angus calves, along with some very well bred Herefords, Charolais and crossbred calves.
The crowd of buyers included a number of return buyers and also support from Tamworth, Quirindi, Hamilton in Victoria, Albury, Penola in South Australia, along with solid support from locals.
Local and interstate lot feeders were also well represented according to the National Livestock Reporting Service.
Weaner steers up to 200 kilograms sold from $445 to $710 a head, while those from 200kg to 280kg sold from $510 to $940.
Weaner steers tipping the scales at between 280kg and 330kg ranged from $800 to $1050, while a small number weighing more than 330kg sold from $980 to $1140.
On a cents a kilogram basis the bulk of the better weaner steers sold from about 300c/kg to 340c/kg, while some pens sold as high as 389c/kg.
In the the weaner heifer pens, those weighing less than 200kg sold from $320 to $580 and those from 200kg to 280kg ranged from $470 to $845.
Weaner heifers tipping the scales at between 280kg and 330kg ranged from $690 to $1150, while a limited number weighing more than 330kg sold to $1105.
Champion pen of weaner steers was awarded to AJ and RJ Larnach from Rockley for their 36 July/August-drop, Millah Murrah-blood Angus steers. The steers weighed an average of 314kg and sold for $1010 a head.
The champion pen of heifers went to Wilf Damberg and Bozena Galeziowski, "Oaklands", Murgo, for their 61 Violet Hills-blood Charolais heifers. The heifers weighed an average of 275kg and sold for $800 a head.
Top priced steers were sold by Mintara Holdings, O'Connell. Their Angus steers with an average weight of 352kg sold for $1140/head or 328c/kg.
The top priced heifers were offered by Karoo Angus, Meadow Flat. The heifers tipped the scales at an average of 285kg and sold for $1150 or 404c/kg.
