SELLING season is well and truly underway at the Central Victoria Livestock Exchange in Miners Rest and there was plenty of jumping around as more than 60,000 rams and lambs were sold on one of the busiest days of the year on Tuesday.
While the day didn't quite match the all-time record of just over 68,000 stocks, multi-millions of dollars changed hands in what one livestock agent said had seen higher than average sales figures.
Livestock Agent with Delacombe-based TB White and Sons Xavier Bourke said this had been one of the biggest sale days of the year.
When he spoke to The Courier just before 4pm, he said he expected sales to continue right up into the evening.
"We've had 40,000 lambs and 20,000 sheep, it's our biggest of the year," he said.
"The sales have been very strong, the best lambs are getting in a range of $265-270 per head and we've had a lot of heavy lambs. Probably about $10-15 (a head) up on what you'd expect.
"The heavy lambs tend to make up $265 a head, while the trade weight lambs have been going for $165-200 a head."
Mr Bourke said all sale stock had been bred in the western district and at this stage drought and fire conditions in the northern states were not bringing extra numbers to the CVLX.
